The Forecast

The evidence for climate change is undeniable.  And now, we're faced with the greatest moral and social challenge humanity has ever known.

On this show we ask:  What is The Forecast?  What are our prospects?  What are the root causes of climate change and what are the solutions?

Solutions to climate change require the clear perspective of science, compassion for all, and above all, understanding that our personal well-being and that of our shared planet are the same thing.

We hope that our show helps listeners better understand and begin to deal with the unprecedented challenges which now confront us.

The solution to global warming is not to fix the world, it is to fix ourselves.Naomi Klein

Climate change is global-scale violence against places and species, as well as against human beings.  Once we call it by name, we can start having a real conversation about our priorities and values.  Because the revolt against brutality begins with a revolt against the language that hides that brutality.Rebecca Solnit

The honorable choice I see is to power-down; stop taking airplane jaunts, repair old things, get out the clothespins, grow food, walk.  And face the truth, that I am party to something so enormously destructive I can hardly know its edges.  The conquering of any addiction begins with these words: I am the guilty party.Barbara Kingsolver

Compassion is not religious business, it is human business, it is not luxury, it is essential for our own peace and mental stability, it is essential for human survival. — Dalai Lama XIV

Climate change... is a perfect and undetectable crime everyone contributes to but for which no one has a motive.  There is no outsider to blame.  We are just living our lives: driving the kids to school, heating our homes, putting food on the table.  Only once we accept the threat of climate change do these neutral acts become poisoned with intention—so we readily reject that knowledge, or react to it with anger and resentment. — George Marshall, climatedenial.org

It is a civilizational wakeup call.  A powerful message—written in the language of fires, floods, droughts, and extinctions—telling us that we need an entirely new economic model and a new way of sharing this planet. — Naomi Klein, This Changes Everything:  Capitalism vs. The Climate

A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.Max Planck

Our recommendations...

  • Make your home energy efficient—insulate first, then insulate some more.  And when you've done that, insulate even more.
  • Abandon fossil fuels as an energy source in your home—transition to all-electric space and water heating.
  • Switch to renewable energy—solar electricity, solar water heating, wind power.
  • Buy or lease an electric vehicle (EV)—the Nissan LEAF (inexpensive!) and Tesla Model S (Consumer Reports best car ever made) are the most popular, but the upcoming Tesla Model 3 (orders being accepted now) and Chevy Bolt will blow away everything else.
  • Divest from fossil fuels.  Reinvest responsibly.  Most financial advisors are clueless—Start here.
  • Lessen your footprint—buy less, buy local; use less, recycle more; live in the moment, care about the future.

The secret of change is to focus all of your energy—not on fighting the old, but on building the new.Socrates
